Despite the lockdown work has been progressing steadily with work on the old Mission Hall and our plan to transform it into the Yetholm Heritage Centre. The latest improvements are the installation of two high-quality archive cupboards and a display case - the photograph below shows the display cabinet being installed. Coincidentally we have also been given a complete run of all the church magazines that have been produced. They were collected by Tom Tokely and passed on to us by Carol Butler. The photograph above shows the cover of the very first edition, the illustration of which was the work of Carol. It's hard to believe that this was produced over 50 years ago - Carol must have been a teenager at the time ... We are very grateful to Tom and Carol for this valuable gift which will now be stored in our fire-proof cupboards for the entertainment and edification of future generations.
This first edition was produced during the ministry of the Reverend Joe Brown (and includes a cartoon of him playing the bagpipes, which Carol thinks was the work of Jack Robb, who also contributes an article). If you would like to read the whole thing, click HERE for a pdf. Although produced and distrubuted by the church, the magazine has a broad focus and contains much valuable information about the wider community. It went through a number of formats (occasionally it is just a simple photocopied sheet) as well as name-changes. It started simply as The Yett, then The Wee Yett - and is currently The Cheviot. We will continue to collect future editions, whatever the shape or name, to add to our archive.
